Loving God

Deuteronomy 6:5

Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

The Bible is essentially about two things: God’s love for us and how we are to love God.  Deuteronomy 6 contains the greatest command for humanity – to love God with all of our heart, soul, and strength.  Jesus summarized all of the laws of the Old Testament in quoting this and saying that it was the greatest commandment.

The Bible is full of laws.  Some are pretty clear why they exist and some seem easy to question.  The truth of the matter comes down to love for God however.  We shouldn’t obey God’s law only if we understand it completely, we should do so because we love God.

We should note that obedience is not the same as love however.  We are told that if we love God, we will obey His commands.  But everybody who obeys does not necessarily love God.  We follow the laws of the land not because of a love for the government but because it is the law and we don’t want to be arrested.  In the same way a person can follow God’s law without truly loving Him.

Love prompts obedience to God but obedience does not guarantee that it is a result of love.  The only way to love God is to love Him.  We should take delight in everything that God does and who He is.   Obedience will come because of this love.
