By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.
Abraham is known first and foremost as a man of faith. It is the characteristic that stands above all others.
First, Abraham is called to leave his homeland and follow in faith to a place that God would show him. Later he is asked to have faith when told that he would have a child even though both he and his wife were past child bearing years. Years later, after Isaac was born, Abraham was asked to express his faith one more time in sacrificing his son.
To do all that Abraham did required extraordinary faith. What was greater was the fact that much was not even fulfilled within his lifetime. Abraham never received the land that God had promised him until generations later when his descendants received it. Likewise, he would never live to see his descendants become as numerous as the stars but he trusted that they would.
It is likely that Abraham was chosen by God because of his faith. Undoubtedly, Abraham is blessed by God because of his faith. It is the most important characteristic that we see in Abraham’s life.
In our lives this principle works in both directions. We can expect God to bless us for our faith. This doesn’t mean financial blessings or necessarily what we expect but rather blessings in accordance to what we need. If we want to be blessed by God, then we need to act in faith.
