Do Not Be Ignorant

1 Corinthians 12:1

Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.

Paul is imploring the Corinthians and all of us down through the centuries not to be ignorant about spiritual gifts.  We know that God has made each of us unique with our own physical traits and personalities.  What we sometimes fail to acknowledge is that God has gifted each of us differently as well.

In Matthew 25 Jesus tells a story of different men given different amounts of money.  Two men put it to good use and make more money.  A third hides his money in the ground.  He doesn’t squander it or waste it but instead fears losing it.  Only when the master returns and sees that the money hasn’t been put to good use does the man lose it.

God has gifted each of us differently.  This is a good thing, not a bad one.  The Corinthians held certain gifts in higher regard than others but Paul makes is clear that all gifts are useful and are needed within the church.  It is not important as to what our gift is compared to others; it is whether we use that gift.  We are to invest what we have for God not bury it in the ground because of fear of failure.

When we faithfully serve God with our gifts we’ll be sure to hear “Well done my good and faithful servant” and be entrusted with even more next time.
