Love is God’s Word

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path.

Psalm 19:9b-10

The decrees of the LORD are firm,
and all of them are righteous.
They are more precious than gold,
than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,
than honey from the honeycomb.

James 1:22

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Usually when we talk about love, we think about love between a man and a woman.  Or from a spiritual side, we think about God’s love for us or even how we ought to love God.  But love is found in God’s Word as well.  It is not just a book about God’s love, it is a love letter to humanity.

Many people think of the Bible as a dry, dusty book with little relevance.  Even Christians can get caught up in the idea that the Bible is just a history book or a book with a bunch of rules.  The reality is that the history in the Bible is all about God’s love.  The rules are an expression of God’s love for us.

It is easy to mistakenly think of God’s rules as something to take the fun out of life.  We shouldn’t drink.  We should reserve sex for within the confines of marriage.  We should control our temper.  The list goes on and on.  It may seem as if God is trying to burden us with a bunch of pointless rules.

Of course the truth is that those rules are actually there to not only protect us but to allow us to enjoy life more fully.  It’s no secret that alcohol damages one’s body, has destroyed countless families, and killed thousands of innocent people at the hands of drunk driving.  So there’s a good reason to protect us from that.  But what about enjoying our lives more fully?

Even though one night stands and multiple partners are perceived as normal thanks to television, study after study has shown that this is not a glamorous and exciting lifestyle.  Instead, the people who have repeatedly been shown to be the most satisfied with their sex life – monogamous married couples!  God gave us a tremendous gift which He was also kind enough to give us instructions about.  And how astounding is it that the people who follow God’s instructions for that gift are the most satisfied with it?

While that is a powerful example, God’s Word shows us His love throughout.  Those who follow it will find less conflict and more enjoyment in their lives.  It is great that a loving God would give us the keys to having a great life.
